| Luna Vineyards 2006 Napa Valley freakout! |
|
Looking to challenge the traditional ways of Friuli winemaking on the Italian-Slovenian border, maverick Italian winemakers began experimenting with new styles of winemaking, creating unique and exciting white wine blends. When Mike Drash, winemaker for Luna Vineyards in Napa Valley, tasted these exotic white wines, you could say he freaked out. |
|
The secret of freakout is in the innovative winemaking. Each varietal is treated individually, and then married together two months before bottling, to create the ultimate blend. To promote the aromatics of the wine, the Chardonnay begins fermentation in tanks before moving to French oak barrels. Meanwhile, a small portion of the Sauvignon Blanc is fermented on the skins like a red wine, and punched down twice a day until fermentation is completed. The Pinot Grigio is fermented in stainless steel for a crisp, lively finish. The distinctive Ribolla Gialla from Vare Vineyard in Napa Valley is the only Ribolla Gialla planted in the U.S. It is fermented in small oak barrels and provides the wine weight, texture and minerality. |
|
Treating each varietal separately creates a complex wine with multiple layers of exotic fruit, soft citrus, honey and spice that dance across your senses. Intense aromas of tropical fruit and orange peel combine with rich flavors of dried apricot, spice and toasted nuts to create a lush textured wine with a brisk mouthwatering finish.
freakout: n: an experience of unrestrained excitement. |

Summerly Spiced Pinot Gris!

Wallace Brook 2008 Willamette Valley Pinot Gris$24.99
Ahhh... the sweet tastes of summer! Melons, peaches, nectarines... the riper the better, love 'em! If I had to put all my favorite summer flavors in a bottle it would be right here: Wallace Brook 2008 Willamette Valley Pinot Gris. Not to be confused by the leaner insipid Pinot Grigio of Italy!
This Oregon Pinot Gris offers up an attractive perfume of tangerine, peach, and apricot. Crisp, dry, and bright, it too will provide pleasure for 2-3 years. With all of the attention focused on Willamette Valley’s Pinot Noirs, their excellent white wines often get overlooked. This is a shame because there is plenty of quality as well as superb value and no one is doing it better than Wallace Brook!
We'll have this beauty open all weekend for your palate's pleasure... corks pop at 10am Saturday and 12noon Sunday! |
|
Background
Pinot Gris originated in Burgundy, like the other members of the Pinot family, and has had a long history all over Europe. In recent times, versions from Alsace and northern Italy have been the best known. Oregon winegrowers introduced Pinot Gris to New World viticulture and in 40 years the variety has become the white wine of Oregon. This Wallace Brook Cellars Willamette Valley Pinot gris embodies the crisp, bright flavors of true quality Oregon Pinot Gris style, at a great price.
Growing Season
In 2008, bud break occurred during the last week of April, and bloom during the last week of June, late timing for both of these events in the north Willamette Valley. The growing season began with cool and wet weather. But, the heat of summer (temps above 90) arrived in mid June and was followed by a relatively hot July, which provided some catch up time. August and September were warm, although not above average. Harvest began the last week in September, with most of harvest taking place in October, which was warm and dry (Indian summer). The grapes for this Pinot Gris were picked in a span from October 6 to 18.
Vineyards
This wine is a blend of grapes from five vineyards in the Chehalem Mountains, Eola-Amity Hills, and Willamette Valley appellations of Oregon.
Winemaking
The focal point of this wine is its primary fruit characteristics, which we achieve through minimalistic winemaking techniques. The grape picking decision is based on flavor and phenolic development with very little reliance on lab results. Whole clusters were gently pressed to get the juice away from the tannins found in the skins and seeds. A variety of cultured yeasts were chosen to bring forth different aspects in the range of flavor possibilities, and a slow, cool fermentation helps retain the primary fruit esters. For enhanced textural richness, about 13% was fermented in older, neutral French oak barrels. To preserve freshness and acidity, this wine did not undergo malolactic fermentation. 900 cases of the wine were bottled on June 24 and 25, 2009.

A Collector's AND Connoisseur's Merlot! |
|
| |
|

Don’t be fooled by the punny name which honors the late sex symbol. This is a very drinkable wine, not something just to be collected by her fans, but by people who enjoy what’s inside the artful bottle as well. The name may say Merlot, but this Napa Valley wine, made from grapes ranging from the Oak Knoll District to the Rutherford District, is actually a blend of 85% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cab adds greater complexity to the nose and more structure to the mouth. The wine will continue to improve with age, and may appreciate in value, as vintages from the 1980s sell for $3,000 and up! But the best way to appreciate this wine is to pair it with a loved one on a romantic occasion... ahhh, the romance of wine! |

Marilyn Merlot 2007 Napa Valley Merlot $29.99
Diamonds may still be a girl’s best friend, but in challenging times an outstanding Napa Valley Merlot that appreciates in value year after year offers a safe and savory haven for wine collectors and connoisseurs alike.
With the release of the Marilyn Merlot 2007 on June 1st (Marilyn’s birthday) a Napa Valley icon continues to offer its fans not just glamour but great value, too. "Marilyn Merlot wines are known to appreciate in value with most selling for several times their original price” notes Bob Holder, one of the owners of Marilyn Wines. "They offer great value as fine Napa Valley wines on release, and they evolve and appreciate with age."
The 2007 vintage of Marilyn Merlot continues this tradition and promises glamorous evenings of enjoyment to its many fans. We're celebrating Marilyn's birthday one month late, but the key word here is "celebrating" and we're honoring her all month by making the 2007 Merlot Frank's CLUB Vino selection for July... we'll have this beauty open all weekend for your palate's pleasure!

Memebers pick one!
Portugal's Ribatejo Region!
The Ribatejo is an expanse of watery grassland, rice fields and leafy vineyards located in the middle of Portugal, northeast of Lisbon. Most of the vineyards are on the wide, flat river valley of the River Tagus ("Tejo"). The best vineyards are located in the charneca, the sand-soiled lands off the southern side of the river. The red wines here are typically made from Castelão (more widely known as Periquita), Trincadeira, and Bordeaux varieties, while the whites are primarily Fernão Pires, Arinto and Sauvignon Blanc.
Jose Lobo de Vasconcellos' family built their winery over 200 years ago on their large estate on the south bank of the Tejo River. Jose renovated the winery in 2003 and has continued his family's wine-making tradition on the estate where he also breeds famous Lusitano horses. Casal Branco still uses traditional old "lagares" (pictured above) to crush the grapes for their finest red wines, while using modern technology to control quality in all aspects of wine production.
These two wines will be your new favorite House Wines for the summer...guarantee it! As much as the wine values are abundant in Spain, Argentina and Chile, they just don't match the lively expression of fruit as does Portugal. I love 'em so much that I made them my CLUBVino selections for the month of June!

Domaine Borgeot 2007 Bourgogne Chardonnay Burgundy, France $24.99
Pure, fresh, fruit from the village next to Chassagne-Montrachet. Well-structured with flinty minerality, and that elegant finish that defines White Burgundy. Great with grilled shellfish, smoked salmon, and any other number of cheeses, especially goat's cheese.
I was able to score 30 cases of this pristine White Burgundy at an awesome price... and made it my Frank's CLUBVino Selection for the month of May! It's a luscious, elegant and extravagant wine to kick off the Spring season. Pop some this weekend at Winterthur's Point-to-Point, enjoy a few more with friends at your favorite French BYOB and keep the last few bottles tucked away in your cellar for 10 years and watch it age gracefully. Importer Tom Weisler will be at the shop on Saturday pouring this beauty along with a handful of his other selections... stop in and taste with us!

The Borgeot brothers, Pascal and Laurent, are fourth generation winemakers in Remigny, just opposite the village of Santenay in Burgundy. Together they work 48 acres of vines, half in red, half in white. The majority of these vines are 30 years old or older. For over twenty years, there vines have received only organic fertilizers. Their reputation locally is such that more-famous producers often send their children to "apprentice" at the domain. Domaine Borgeot wines were first imported into the U.S. in 1998. In that year both Robert Parker and Wine Spectator cited Borgeot wines scores in the upper 80s and low 90s. They have received similar notes ever since. |

Jaboulet Isnard
2003 Cotes du Ventoux
Rhone Valley $14.99
A juicy little treat you can afford to buy by the case as your new house red! Jaboulet, one of the Rhones most recognizable houses, makes this wine from grapes grown on the slopes of Mount Ventoux, which was first planted to vine in the ninth century. From the stellar 2003 vintage this spicy red is based on the ever-present Grenache variety, it displays lovely aromas of red fruits, white pepper, and herbs-de-Provence, soft, well-rounded tannins, and a light, fruity finish. Perfect for pizza, pasta, or even turkey! The Grenache in this cuvee conjures up the deep, dark fruit aromas of areas such as Rasteau and the Cotes du Ventoux while the spicy Syrah adds another layer of complexity to this mouth-filling red. |
|
 |
|
| |
The Frey family, longstanding winemakers in Champagne and owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux, acquired Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné in January 2006, thus adding to its portfolio of prestigious names. Frédéric Jaboulet, together with Frédéric Mairesse, the new director, share the Frey family’s passion for excellence.
La Chapelle, which is situated on the hillside of l’Hermitage, looks out over the Rhône Valley. During the 13th century, the Chevalier de Stérimberg made it his home on his return from the crusades. Later still, it became the source of the family’s flagship wine, Hermitage La Chapelle. The 1961 vintage would be classed among the Twelve mythical bottles of the 20th century, and a small number of bottles and magnums are still kept by Jaboulet and in a few cellars elsewhere in the world…
For nearly two centuries, Jaboulet has been producing wines that represent generations of hard work and a passion for excellence. In order to perpetuate these values, Jaboulet adheres to an unswerving commitment to improving vineyards, through strategic acquisitions and work in the cellars, while respecting the environment at the same time. |

Georg Albrecht Schneider 2006 Niersteiner Paterberg Riesling $19.99
|
|
The sweet succulent aromas of bosc pears are woven with lilacs and just a hint of petrol. Asian pears unfold on the palate and mingle enticingly with citrus zest and cardamom. Brilliant crisp and exuberant finish that is reminiscent of classic Niersteiner Riesling flavors. No oak, just great fruit flavors that delight the palate and the mind. Considered as a 'king of wines', this beauty has wonderful finesse, pedigree, and beautiful elegance. I absolutely love this wine... |

Montes 2008 Cherub Rose of Syrah $19.99
| After several years of experimentation, Aurelio Montes settled on producing a rosé from Syrah, a grape he made famous in Chile with the country’s first-ever Ultra Premium 100% Syrah called Montes’ Folly in 2002.
As explained by Aurelio, “I decided to make a rosé from Syrah grown in our Archangel Estate in Marchigüe, in the Colchagua Valley. Our vineyards here are in a coastal area which provides the perfect temperature and conditions for producing a lovely, ripe rosé. I chose Syrah because this grape has a wonderful purple-red color and gives fresh yet structured wines that can be enjoyed as an apéritif or with food.”
Located only 11 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the cool breezes from the western facing slopes, together with the loamy soils, result in a slow maturation of the grapes which allowed for the perfect balance of citrusy acidity and bursting, ripe fruit. The Syrah grapes were hand-picked and sorted to ensure that only the finest grapes were used to make Cherub. |
|
| The grapes were gently crushed, then transported by gravity to the tanks below in the winery where they then underwent “Vin d’une Nuit”. This is a process of cold maceration where the must is left in contact with the skins overnight (for approximately eight hours) to fully extract color and aromas and infuse the wine with flavor. Once the juice was racked until totally clear, it underwent alcoholic fermentation using selected yeast at 50º F for 20 days. To maintain the freshness of the wine, it did not undergo oak aging.
Montes’ Cherub is a seductive, elegant, dry wine, with an intense cherry-pink color. It is a well-made expression of the grape variety and terroir. On the nose and the palate, it demonstrates a distinctive Syrah character with spiciness and hints of strawberries, rose and orange peel. With good fruit concentration, it shows richness in texture across the palate that leads to a delightfully long finish. It has a strong backbone of acidity and a slight amount of tannin that gives the wine a defined structure. |

St.
Francis of Sonoma County (Members Pick One Wine)
History St. Francis Winery 1979 In 1971, Joe
Martin, a San Francisco businessman, and his wife Emma,
purchased the 100 acre Behler Ranch Vineyard in Sonoma
Valley, located in the historic town of Kenwood. In 1979,
after several years of growing and selling grapes to local
wineries, the decision was made by Joe and partner Lloyd
Canton to build their own winery. St. Francis Winery was
established and christened after St. Francis of Assisi, in
recognition of the Saint’s role as a protector of the
natural world and as acknowledgement of the Franciscan
order, believed to have been the first to bring European
grape cultivation to the new world. The Tradition Continues
In the fall of 1999 the construction of St. Francis’ new
state-of-the-art winery facility was completed just in time
for the 1999 harvest. The new winery, with Hood Mountain as
its picturesque backdrop, is located on the Wild Oak
Vineyard, 1 mile west of the original winery site in Sonoma
Valley. Much care and thought was involved in the creation
of this immaculate facility, allowing the St. Francis
winemaking team the luxury of expanding their winemaking
capabilities. |

lots, then barrel aged for six months in French and American
oak barrels prior to blending. Barrels are lees stirred by
hand during aging to achieve a rich, lush mouth-feel. This

Hess Select 2007
Monterey Chardonnay |
 |
$14.99
Monterey's cooling fog and coastal breezes create an ideal climate for growing Chardonnay, yielding wines with tantalizing tropical notes and crisp acidity. The core of this wine comes from Hess's 352-acre Shirtail Creek Estate Vineyard in Monterey's coastal valley. 2007 began with a dry winter and spring, with about half of the usual rainfall. The drier climate created ideal growing conditions with manageable yields in the vineyards. Moderate temperatures, without the typical heat spikes in September and October leading into harvest, allowed the fruit to ripen evenly, without dehydration.

Tasting Notes: This wine is medium-bodied and refreshing with tropical fruit and citrus aromas, followed on the palate by alluring fruit flavors of pineapple, green apple and lemon. Well-balanced acidity gives this wine a clean, crisp mouthfeel with a zesty finish. We love this wine SO much at Frank's that we made it our CLUBvino selection for August... stop in all month long and taste it with us! |

Mirrabooka 2006 Pinot Noir Victoria, Australia $14.99
Ahh... Pinot Noir in the springtime, nothing better! Actually, I'll take Pinot Noir any time of the year, but this crowd pleaser is a perfect one for the outdoors! The sparkling pink ruby color draws you to this wine immediately. It is an intensely flavored Pinot Noir featuring a balanced blend of fruit, spice and earth characteristics. Raspberry fruit aromas and flavors are married with pepper and mild spices, hints of eucalyptus and classic Pinot Noir undergrowth characters. There is a long and lively finish with tangy acidity and integrated tannins. This Pinot Noir is drinking well now. Enjoy through 2010.
The wine underwent primary fermentation in stainless steel and then spent six months on oak, where it underwent malolactic fermentation. This Pinot Noir embodies the characters of cooler climate wines—savory fruit, earth & spice.
The fruit for this Pinot Noir came from premium Geelong vineyards in the Victoria region. This wine was made using a philosophy of minimal handling to preserve the wine’s primary fruit character. |

Variety: 100% Pinot Noir
Region: Victoria (the 2006 vintage is 100% Geelong fruit)
